Update on Interview

As a quick update, the paper version of the article Neva so kindly did hit newsstands yesterday, 10/24/08. If you got a copy - cool! If not, you can still check it out online...

Thanks, Neva for all the work you did - it was a great piece!

Secret Artworks 2008

Hello All!

First off, Happy Fall! This post will be a short one but chock full of news from the last few weeks. Hope everyone is enjoying their preparations for Halloween - I'm not sure if we will be able to hold onto the candy long enough to be able to give it to the neighborhood kids but heck, we will try!

I've registered as a participating artist for Secret Artworks 2008. The piece is finished and en route to Artworks Cincinnati but as it is secret you won't be able to see it until after the reception in November. You have to buy a ticket! For more information about this great fundraiser please see here.

Neva Martin with the Community Press recently did an interview on my work and foundations. While the paper version does not come out until this week, there is a link to the story on Cincinnati.com here. Hope you like it -

The Boone County Visual Arts Association recently held their yearly elections. I was appointed Webmaster and am hoping to continue the great work of our awesome previous Webmaster, Teressa Barnhill, Director of Transition Studio. Congratulations and thank you to Mary Jo, a great friend and artist who has taken the role of President, and Linda Lee Whaley, ditto, who has taken the role of Vice President. Chris Allen has continued his time on the board and his work for the group through filling the desperately needed roles of both Treasurer and Events Coordinator. Ira Sena has continued his role as Secretary, and there are some new committee chairs as well! For all the details, see www.bcvaa.org.

Hope everything is going well and continue to stay in touch - thank you to all who have kindly signed my guestbook - if you haven't, then make sure you do!

Pollution Too Close to Home, WIP

Hello All,

There are a few things going on - first and foremost I'd like to comment on something that is bothering me here at home.

A few days ago a crew doing sewer/pipe work burst into a crude oil pipeline in our neighborhood I didn't realize the oil pipeline was there but I knew something was going on when the house was filled with the most noxious odor you have ever smelled. A mix of garbage and death (which really could be one and the same). Turns out that the contractor crew of a neverending pipe project two blocks away had broken into an oil pipeline and I am still getting whifs when the wind is in the right direction. There is a link to the most recent story here.

The oil has seeped into the creek which is where I get a lot of inspiration for my work. In fact, my painting The Bridge was painted not 50 feet away from where this has occured. Mistakes happen but I am more than a little perturbed that a little more caution wasn't followed when they were digging with their equipment. Citizens are warned when digging in their yard to watch for underground wires. I'm wondering where the lapse in common sense or policy occured that would cause this to happen.

I get a lot of inspiration from the everyday, as my bio says, and I am quite upset that we are not only dealing with regular polluting of our creek from society, but now it's been upped by someone cutting into an oil pipeline. I thought this only happened in Alaska.

I am not even beginning to address the impact this could have on the ecosystem already present. I wonder what effects the spill will have on the fish and wildlife there already? There is a deep fishing hole not 20 feet upstream from where this has occured.

When will we quit shooting ourselves in the foot?

Work In Process.... Findlay Market

For something a little cheerier (and back to the studio now), I am attaching a photo of a section of my newest work in process, Baskets at Findlay Market.

The painting will probably take another two weeks or so to complete, but I'm looking forward to being able to put the finished piece on the website and this blog. At the end it will be touched up with some brighter highlights, details will be added and of course color filled in but even then it will probably be more of a traditional piece than my typical semi-abstractions.

Show News...

The studio will soon be registered with the Covington Roster, which is a great (and relatively labor-free) way for local artists to submit their profile for matching with Covington venues. Artists - more info can be found here.

I am still working on next year's art calendar but we have a few tentative events that we would like to do. I'm hoping to do a wine tasting and art reception/salon as well as a reception late this year (b.b. - before baby). I'll let you know when we have more information.

Other News...

Thanks to everyone who has checked out the website and signed the Guestbook. We are still making some minor changes but the major work is finished and hopefully I will get some new work out there soon for you to see!

Until next time!
